April is Sexual Assault Awareness month. To raise awareness in our area, we collected over 400 pairs of shoes to represent the number of reported sexual assaults (only about 1 in 10 is reported) in Greenwood County during the course of one year. We placed them on the courthouse steps. The mayor and county solicitor spoke. We got front page coverage in the local newspaper and made the 5, 6 and 11 o'clock news. |

In another event designed to raise awareness to the problem of sexual assault, we set up 7 locations, including 2 college campuses, where we released balloons. One balloon every 90 seconds was released to demonstrate the frequency of sexual assault - one assault every 90 seconds. It really got people's attention. Once again, we made the front page of the newspaper and 5, 6 and 11 o'clock news. |

The Diocese of Charleston's Child Protection Services has a mandatory training for all church personnel and volunteers who have access with children, designed to help recognize and prevent the sexual abuse of children. As facilitator, these trainings were conducted, materials were discussed and difficult questions answered, best practices outlined and disclosures handled in a compassionate, empathetic manner. The trainings were not limited to Catholic parishoners. |

Domestic Violence Response Team |

We organized a DVR team that would respond to calls and disclosures of domestic violence within the parish community. We outlined and put into place safe practices and protocols when handling victims and their families. Our program was then adapted by other parishes. |
